To prove your loss
Keep in a secure place, preferably away from home, a list of your possessions, with photos or a video of the interior of your house. You must be able to submit bills, estimates or pictures of valuable possessions (jewelry, furs, art, etc.). Warranties or user guides can also be used as proof.
In case of emergency
In the event of damage caused by fire, wind or water, or vandalism, or any other situation requiring immediate intervention, contact us right away. We will direct you to a claims adjuster, available 24 hours a day.
See section : Emergency Service
For emergency work
If the situation requires and you are unable to reach the claims service of your insurance company, have the emergency work done as soon as possible in order to minimize the damage or limit access to the property. Be sure to keep the itemized bills as proof. Your insurer will be grateful to you and promptly reimburse you for your costs (provided the claim is covered).
In case of water damage
In case of water damage, you must clean the damaged property as quickly as possible in order to remove the elements that are harmful to your health (mildew, contamination, etc.). Do not throw away damaged property because insurers will want to see it for themselves. Keep the damaged property outside the house if it is a health hazard or, if you must absolutely get rid of it, be sure to take pictures of it first.
If you need alternative housing
If your house is uninhabitable due to a covered damage, “additional living expense” coverage provides compensation to rehouse you temporarily. It covers additional housing and food costs over and above what you normally spend at home.
In the event of theft or vandalism
Always notify the police. The insurer will obtain a copy of the police report for the usual fraud checks and recovering cash payments from those guilty of the crime. Also, remember to call the police if you notice the disappearance of certain items of property not included on the first list.
To be paid replacement value
You must replace damaged or stolen property with new property comparable to what you had before, with no deduction for depreciation. Also, if you have purchased coverage like Optimum Form, you can obtain a claim settlement for the property at its replacement value without having to replace it. Otherwise, you will be reimbursed with depreciation taken into account. In other words, an amount will be substracted from the cost of replacing the object, to reflect wear and tear.
When in doubt
Feel free to contact a Sogedent broker. He is your representative with the insurer, especially when seeking to settle a claim.
