Boat and Personal Watercraft Insurance

Can I let someone else drive my boat or personal watercraft?

Every frequent driver, principal or occasional, must be mentioned as an authorized driver in your policy. Also:

  • For children under 12, the maximum authorized motor power is 10hp, and for marine pilots between 12 and 16, 40hp.
  • Persons under the age of 16 are not authorized to drive a personal watercraft.

Proof of competency is required of all drivers.

Since September 15, 2009, drivers of all motorized crafts must carry proof of competency. "Motorized craft" means any watercraft propelled by a motor, whatever the size, including electric thrusters.

For more information, please contact the Office of Boating Safety at 1 800 267-6687 or visit their website.

Remember that allowing an unauthorized individual to drive your boat could jeopardize your right to receive compensation from your insurer.
